Ace-X Plus+ Fat Tyre Electric Bike
Summary
This electric bike has serious attitude, with styling reminiscent of a scrambler motorcycle. With heavy duty frame and fat knobbly tyres, it looks and feels tough! At $3,590, it’s surprising just how many features the Ace X manages to cram in, including hydraulic disc brakes, front suspension, retro LED headlight and even an integrated cup holder. Ebikes never looked so good!
With my involvement with adventure gear rental marketplace Quipmo.com I’ve become obsessed with the fast-evolving electric bike scene. So when I discovered that one of the fastest growing ebike brands in Australia was located just down the road, I was stoked to get the opportunity to take an Ampd Bros Ace-X Plus+ electric bike for a spin.

In a range of conditions I put the Ampd Bros Ace to the test – read on to find out how it performed!
Ampd Brothers Ace
The Ampd Brothers Ace is a scrambler-inspired Shimano 7-speed electric bike designed with a solid and chunky feel. This is the signature model in the Ampd Bros ebike range, with retro styling and a spacious seat providing comfort for riders of all sizes.

The Ace comes in several models, but the first decision you’ll need to make is whether you prefer a step-through frame (the Ace-S) or the high-bar crossframe (Ace-X, pictured). Both models are tough, but if strength is your priority opt for the Ace-X (because there’s one thing I remember from my first year studying engineering at uni achieving strength under a load all about the triangles).
Once you’ve decided on your frame, your next quandary will be which model to choose, the standard model or the Plus+. Both models are equipped with the signature Kenda sport mud tyres and Shimano 7-speed rapid fire transmission, with the most notable differences between the two models are the bigger battery allowing for a greater range (50km vs 70km) and the front suspension included on my Plus+ demo model.
Ampd Bros Ace X Plus+ Review
First thing’s first…I’ve experienced plenty of cool rides in my time including electric skateboards, custom motorbikes and artificial waves, but the Ace X is actually the first pedal-assisted electric bike I’ve ever ridden.
So if you’re new to riding ebikes, like me you’re probably wondering how the whole ‘pedal-assist’ aspect works. Well it’s really as simple as it sounds. Simply hop on, get comfortable, choose your speed setting (from 1 to 5) and just like a normal pushbike, commence pedaling.

Once you have some forward momentum the electric motor gradually kicks in, assisting to maintain speed or accelerating towards the top speed of 30km/hr, depending on the ride intensity. The key thing to know, is that the bike won’t just zip away from a standstill like the throttle on a motorcycle, it’s ongoing pedaling that dictates the speed of a pedal-assisted ebike.
When you reach cruising speed, it really is a breeze to ride along paths and bikeways. Handling is reminiscent of a BMX, simple and responsive, and the wide tyres offer a strong sense of stability at all speeds. The disc brakes are also super responsive when you need to rapidly shave off some speed.

The Ace X also feels right at home when you hit the unpaved trails. The front suspension, coupled with the fat knobbly tyres and cushy seat, effortlessly absorb the shock of potholes and rocks. And if you want to get a little bit wild, you can stand on the pedals and launch over any inviting bumps and jumps.
Ampd Bros Ace X Top speed
After getting the hang of this whole ‘pedal-assist’ thing, which I must say is an absolute game-changer for recreational cyclists, the next question that crossed my mind was its top speed.

So on a wide open road I let my hair down to see where the bar-mounted digital speedo would max out. That number, my friends, was a hair raising 31.4 km/hr. Plenty of momentum to get you to your destination!
Battery
The other curiosity about the Ampd Bros Ace X is the battery. Mounted conveniently under the seat, the battery can be locked and secured with a removable key. This also means the battery can be removed and taken into your home or garage for charging; that’s right, no need to plug in the whole vehicle like a Tesla!

A full charge can take a few hours, so like your iPhone it’s probably best to leave it plugged in overnight. From my testing this should allow approximately 50km of pedal-assisted range, possibly even up to 70km according to the manufacturers specifications. But fear not, if the battery runs out, despite the additional weight it’s still quite easy to get around on as a conventional 7-gear pushbike so you’ll never be left stranded.

Summary
The Ampd Bros Ace X is an ebike with attitude. It’s tough, pretty easy to ride and plenty of fun! This bike perfectly suited to the coastal lifestyle, being compact enough to maneuver in tight situations, tough enough to take on a few bumps, and comfortable enough to cruise the bikepaths. The generously sized seat accommodates riders of virtually all shapes and sizes, maybe even a companion, and the fat tyres provide a solid and stable feel to the ride. I’m loving the integrated cup holder, it fits a coffee or tinnie nicely, and the headlight is literally the jewel on the crown! For the price, I reckon you’d be hard pressed to find a better ebike in this category.
